General Motors Corp. today gave the first public peek at the design of the Chevrolet Cruze compact car as it announced plans to invest more than $500 million in the United States to build the vehicle.

GM plans to officially unveil the Cruze, which is being built on GM’s global compact car architecture, at the Paris auto show next month.

There’s no shortage of opinion makers who think GM should throw Hummer under the bus. Especially now as SUV and full-size pickup sales are “readjusting,” and fuel prices are much higher than we’d like. Add to that the political correctness of bashing anything and everything that isn’t a hybrid or doesn’t get the same fuel economy as any form of crossover vehicle, and you can see why Hummer’s had a bull’s eye on its back for the last 18 months.

AM General LLC, the Mishawaka company that manufactures the Humvee military vehicle and H2 Hummer consumer sport-utility vehicle, now plans to build taxies.

AM General will make the Standard Taxi for Vehicle Production Group LLC of Troy, Mich., which recently landed $160 million in funding for the project, according to the South Bend Tribune.

As Americans’ appetite for gas-guzzlers has evaporated, General Motors may be closer to selling its Hummer brand, according to Reuters.

The struggling auto maker is in talks with Mahindra & Mahindra, an Indian counterpart, as well as Russian and Chinese manufacturers, the news service reported citing unnamed sources. Mahindra has long been considered a potential buyer of the Hummer brand, given its desire to own a line of sport-utility vehicles.

General Motors Corp is in talks with Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd and automakers in Russia and China about selling its Hummer brand, sources familiar with the matter said.

One source close to the discussions said Mahindra is not very interested at this time, as it has plans to launch its own trucks and sport utility vehicles in the U.S. market.
