Early versions of the Chevrolet Volt’s battery packs are powerful enough to run the high-stakes rechargeable car, but dozens of issues remain before General Motors Corp. can start selling the revolutionary vehicle in 2010 as planned.

The Volt’s chief engineer is on a tight schedule to figure out how the car will handle the batteries’ weight, dissipate their heat and mechanically transfer their power to the wheels. That’s not to mention the list of issues that have nothing to do with the fact that the car plugs in to the wall for recharging.

The stinky steaming air that escapes from a car’s tailpipe could help us use less gas

The stinky, steaming air that escapes from a car’s tailpipe could help us use less gas.

Researchers are competing to meet a challenge from the U.S. Department of Energy: Improve fuel economy 10 percent by converting wasted exhaust heat into energy that can help power the vehicle.

General Motors Corp. is close to reaching the goal, as is a BMW AG supplier working with Ohio State University. Their research into thermoelectrics — the science of using temperature differences to create electricity — couldn’t come at a better time as high gas prices accelerate efforts to make vehicles as efficient as possible.

HUMMER H3T

If HUMMER had a theme song, it’d probably be the Allman Brothers’ Whipping Post — the one that goes “Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel, like I been tied to the whipping post…” The brand has been the go-to effigy when something needs to burn on the altar of eco desecration. But HUMMER doesn’t have a theme song, it has the tagline “Like No Other.” It also has a new pick-em-up truck we had the chance to drive recently in the High Sierras: the H3T. Follow the jump to find out if it’s another HUMMER like no other, and check out the gallery of hi-res images below.

It’s the 14th straight year Toyota Motor Corp.’s high-end brand has held the top position in the annual study, which measures problems experienced by the original owners of vehicles after three years. Lexus had 120 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 145 last year.

August 2, 2008 One of the biggest debuts at the 2008 British International Motor Show - and certainly the most floorspace - was claimed by the Opel Insignia, a new mid-size sedan that will offer seven different engine configurations and a number of technical innovations when it hits the showroom floor in Germany late this year and other markets from January 2009.

The technology packed into the Insignia includes a new Eye camera system that reads speed and no-passing signs and displays them on the instrument panel to provide an extra level of awareness to the driver. The camera is a high-resolution, 30fps wide-angle camera mounted on the windshield which is also used for a Lane Departure Warning system that lets you know if you veer offline.
